Laurie Olinder looked to the natural world for both subject and material. She crushed deep fuchia pokeberries into ink, boiled down black walnuts, crushed berries from a black Cherry tree and and dipped her brush in strong dark coffee to create her washes. With these organic mediums, she again started with a mark that blossomed into an abstract evocation of some natural form – amoeba, star, tree, or galaxy – microscopic to expansive. Hung together in a grid that can change with each new hanging, each individual square engages in a dialogue with its neighbors.
